Chelmsford Combined Clubs Bowling Tour 2017

Letter from Mark Hughes

Dear all,

Lionmede Bowling Club is considering a bowling tour of the West Country Bristol and Bath area sometime in August 2017. Arrangements’ are currently at an early stage and dates, playing venues and hotel are yet to be fixed. (Most likely dates at the moment 11 th - 18 th August or 18 th - 25 th August 2017.)

Like a number of local clubs we are limited in numbers and in order to make such a trip economically viable I am trying to establish numbers who may be interested in coming with us before committing to other clubs to form a combined bowling tour. I am told that some clubs have travelled with us in the past and a good trip was had by all.

Numbers need to be in the region of 45 – 50 (a full coach load) including playing members and partners. Lionmede members interested stand at 20 – 26 depending on commitments. So it will have to be on a first come first served basis.

I anticipate that we would travel to the hotel venue on a Friday stay for 7 nights travelling home again the following Friday. We estimate the cost to be in the region of £460 - £480 per person, this is not a quote, only an estimate based on other recent club tour costs. The actual cost may be a little more or a little less! This would include all coach travel, hotel accommodation B&B and evening meal for 7 nights, 6 games to play at different clubs in the area and local visits to places of interest for those not playing on the various days.

I can confirm that a coach company has now agreed an executive 53 seat coach and the daily trips in the price I have negotiated so far.

I have concluded that the Bristol and Bath city hotels are very expensive at that time of year, however having spoken to representatives of Somerset County Bowling Association I have contacted a number of hotels in Weston Super Mare and found one the Grand Atlantic Hotel on the sea front that is used by other bowing tours and is offering favourable rates for early booking. There is also evening entertainment in the price. This is ongoing but looks good at the moment.

Bowling clubs I have considered are Bath (City Club), Clevedon (David Bryant’s club), Street, Weston S M, Banwell and Burnham on Sea. All to be confirmed latter before the end of the season.

If there is any interest please contact Mark Hughes preferably via Email at or telephone 01245 604178.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Hughes
